Velvet Bean ( Mucuna pruriens) or Naikurana and its Health Benefits

Posted by NIDHISH KP on

The Velvet Bean(Mucuna pruriens) has many traditional and medicinal usages including treating pain, cholera, diabetes, infertility, scorpion bites, snakebites, toothaches, increases testosterone, reduces inflammation, increases libido,  kills some parasites, reduces spasms, calms nerves, lowers blood sugar, reduces fever, lowers cholesterol, blood purifier and the list goes on.

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia and widely naturalized and cultivated. Its  common names include velvet bean, Bengal velvet bean, cowagecowitchlacuna bean, sea beans, buffalo beans, Kapikachu, Atmagupta,Naikurana,Herbal Viagra and Lyon bean. The plant is notorious for the extreme itchiness it produces on contact, particularly with the young foliage and the seed pods. It has value in agricultural and horticultural use and has a range of medicinal properties.

The seeds of Mucuna pruriens have been used for treating many dysfunctions in Tibb-e-Unani (Unani Medicine). It is also used in Ayurvedic medicine. It has long been used in traditional Ayurvedic Indian medicine in an attempt to treat diseases including Parkinson's disease.(It contains levodopa (L-dopa), which is used to treat Parkinson's disease. L-dopa is changed to the chemical dopamine in the brain. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease occur in patients due to low levels of dopamine in the brain. Unfortunately, most L-dopa is broken down in the body before it ever reaches the brain unless special chemicals are used with levodopa. These chemicals are not present in cowhage)

Dopamine also increases other youth hormones such as testosterone (it must be mentioned that these increases are never throwing the endocrine system out of balance, merely improving levels which tend to decrease over time in the average person). These resulting increased levels of these hormones from the use of mucuna pruriens extracts, powders and/or raw herbs explains its association with increasing libido, fertility, lean muscle mass, reducing signs of aging such as wrinkles and body fat, increasing bone density and even boosting overall energy levels.

mucuna pruriens extract basically cures premature ejaculation and the amount of downtown between ejaculations by reducing hypersensitivity in the genitals.

This herbal adaptogen can also be used by anyone simply wanting to have fun. The abundance of bliss chemicals combined with the velvet beans adept ability at helping men last longer sexually and increasing libido for both genders makes this a safe and hilariously fun herb to use recreationally.

The powerful benefits of mucuna pruriens extract and whole herb should be temporarily avoided while pregnant or suffering from diabetes (it has blood sugar lowering properties). It should also be avoided by anyone with schizophrenia. If you choose to use adaptogenic herbs to manage or reverse any disease or disorder, always work with a knowledgeable health care practitioner.

Builds fertility in men (Increases semen volume, sperm count and sperm motility, better double up boys...)

Very potent at increasing libido for both men and women

Useful for   leucorrhoea (vaginal discharge), menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding) and spermatorrhoea (involuntary ejaculation) which are all signs of leakage of Jing/Ojas, which is the foundational essence of health

Helps men last longer sexually

Used to build muscle in those who are weak

Helps to minimize depression

Helps digestion without increasing pitta

A WORD OF CAUTION -   It should not be used by pregnant or lactating women because it can lower prolactin and it increases testosterone.  Should not be used with MAO inhibitors.  Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors are a class of drugs used for depression and Parkinson's Disease.  Be aware that altering the levels of brain chemicals like dopamine and serotonin also affect many other hormones, enzymes, and other chemicals which keep the body in balance. The long-term impacts on healthy humans taking high levels of L-dopa are unclear and warrant further research. It is best to proceed with caution when taking mucuna extracts and to follow the labeled dosages. It is a powerful plant with many biological actions that should be respected. In other words. . . the belief system of some people taking herbals supplements of: "if some is good, more is better," does not apply with velvet bean.
